Even though chiropractors are known for having great success in relieving back pain and neck pain, a chiropractic adjustment can help a person’s health in many other ways.
In a recent discussion I had with one of our practice members, I realized it was necessary to share a few of these, so I compiled 4 Great Benefits of Chiropractic on Health.
Enjoy.
Lowering High Blood Pressure
For many years chiropractors have been spreading the word about the lowering of high blood pressure with a chiropractic adjustment. This is typically due to the realignment of the upper cervical vertebrae, allowing the body to properly self regulate.
A recent high blood pressure study showed such great success they published it on WebMD.com.
As proud as I am for the profession receiving the recognition it deserves for helping prevent the use of unnecessary medication, it is important that other factors that effect high blood pressure be visited also. However, visiting a chiropractor should definitely be included on the list.
Relieving Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
I am of the opinion that carpal tunnel syndrome just may be one of the most overused and least successful surgeries that one can have. While gutting the carpal tunnel to release pressure off the median nerve due to trauma or fracture(similar to the one I had on my severely broken wrist and dislocated hand), the cause of carpal tunnel symptoms often has nothing to do with the tunnel.
Chiropractic adjustments to the appropriate cervical vertebra have shown to help people fully recover from symptoms associated with a carpal tunnel diagnosis. Not only that, but unlike the surgery which often ends up with a wrist that needs to be immobilized, and symptoms that switch to the other side, an adjustment relieves the pressure off of the nerve root bilaterally. This keeps the unwanted pressure off of cause of the symptoms, resolving them fully. Without surgery.
If the cervical spine adjustment does not relieve the symptoms fully, it is possible that there is a misalignment in one of the joints in the kinetic chain of the upper body. This simply involves checking the neck, shoulder, radius, ulna, and carpal bones for misalignment. When realigned, the kinetic chain begins to work efficiently, and pressure is taken off of all areas that lead to the carpal tunnel.
Helping Infertility
One of my favorite instances in chiropractic was when a wife visited our office because the fertility treatments she was receiving were not working, and she saw a small local news story on chiropractic helping with fertility problems.
While this condition is not that uncommon for many chiropractors, the condition of her spine was nowhere near considered ideal. She had a severe lumbar and upper thoracic scoliosis, and at the age of 13 a surgeon inserted 3 titanium rods into her spine. This essentially left her spine immobile from the 4th cervical vertebra to L5.
I still remember thinking how challenging this was going to be since it did not leave me many areas to adjust physically. I ended up choosing to adjust her atlas manually, and using a combination of the activator instrument and extremely light drop-table on her pelvis.
After explaining the protocol she visited our office for adjustments over the next two months. When she no longer visited us I felt a little bewildered, but knew I had done my best to help her.
About two months later she was in one of rooms waiting, and there was a note on her chart, “3 months pregnant.” This is after 3 years of fertility treatments, and the only thing she had changed was getting adjusted. It really goes to show that in spite of physical limitations of the body, like those titanium rods, that the body is amazingly resilient and responsive without nervous system interference. There are many examples of chiropractic helping infertility, so it is definitely worth exploring.
Preventing Bed Wetting and Incontinence
symptoms following chiropractic care surprises many people when I tell them. This is sometimes due to the fact that many have no idea that chiropractic may help such conditions, or they were too embarrassed to mention the condition to a chiropractor.
The approach I take usually involves lumbar and sacrum alignment, with an attempt to remove interference on the nerves associated with the bladder. There have been a number of studies showing the efficacy of adjusmtnet ofor bladder control issues, and you can check them out here.
