Did you know that 90% of the brains activity goes towards maintaining your body upright in it’s gravitational field, like a guidance system on a rocket? This means that when a person is mechanically distorted (poor posture and misalignment’s) that even more of the brains energy is required to accomplish the same thing. This leaves less of the brain to manage and control other vital functions such as immune response, cellular recovery, respiration, cognitive thinking, and rest and recovery (sleep). Plus, poor posture accelerates the aging process of the spine, discs, and joints of the body.
People with poor posture tend to get sick more often, have less energy, and develop conditions such as herniated discs and arthritis early in life, as well as chronic headaches, insomnia, allergies and asthma, to name a few. Then, some get hooked on medications to treat the symptoms leaving the primary cause undetected and uncorrected.
Poor posture has many causes, both acquired and hereditary. Either way, to a certain extent, poor posture is correctable, and the earlier in life we start to work on it the better. This is why it is so important to have your children checked at an early age. Kids and their heavy backpacks, computers and computer games as well as long hours slouched in front of the TV, are all a primary cause of poor posture in children.
Then, there are years and years of sitting at a desk hunched over in flexed position in school and college classrooms. Then, you enter the workforce where most spend the day in front of a computer. Except now you have the stresses of modern day adult living to deal with which can cause even more muscle tension, distortions, spinal imbalances and accelerate the poor posture-poor health chain reaction.
So, what can be done to prevent and correct poor posture?
Well, modern chiropractic in my opinion is #1 on the list. A good chiropractor can not only correct your misalignment’s and postural distortions, they can also help teach you how to prevent the causes of poor posture.
For instance, in my Yorkville Chiropractic Clinic we use chiropractic adjustments, traction, posture exercises, custom orthotics, and massage to help restore posture and misalignment’s.
